Basic Guide on How to Fish

This is a very basic tutorial to assist novice players on how to fish.

Equip the Primary/Main hand tool:

If you need to purchase the starting rod (Weathered Fishing Rod), you can get that information from the
Tools / Locations page.

To equip the Primary/Main hand tool, open the menu by pressing the minus “-“ key (found on num pad).
Select Attributes & Gear.
Select the Main hand icon, and from the items list, equip the Weathered Fishing Rod.

Selecting the Primary tool will change the class respectively.

Don’t forget to get bait and equip it in the Pack slot as well.  For starters, try the Lugworm for bait.

How to Start

After equipping your Weathered Fishing Rod and bait, stand next to a body of water (even some
fountains in Ul’dah and Limsa Lominsa will work).  If you’re close enough, you should see an exclamation
point on top of the screen.

Open the menu by pressing the minus “-“ key (found on num pad).  The option to Fish should now
appear.  Select it and press enter to start fishing.

After casting the line, you should now see the following options:

The Grade of the Fishing point determines the difficulty and type of items you will receive.
You can adjust the Depth meter up/down to any desired point.

My personal experience:  At starting levels, I always choose the default Depth (middle).  When
you start using different types of bait (i.e. worm, lure) to aim for a particular type of fish or fish in
higher Grade waters, then Depth will probably matter.

After “your line sinks to the desired depth”, select the Wait option in the Aim box.
If no fish takes the bait, you will automatically reel in the line and cast out again.

If you get a nibble or bite, you will have the option to Wait, Jig or Cancel.
Choose Jig.

A curved meter will pop up with a dot moving back and forth.
When you feel that you’ve got the right spot, select Jig again.

My personal experience:  Immediately double tap the enter key so that the dot stays at its
default location (center).   I find this to be easier to make a catch if a certain scenario (see
Guessing Game:  “The fish has tired, but you still cannot reel it in”).

Guessing Game:

At this point, you’re playing the hot and cold game based on the response you see:

The fish has tired, but you still cannot reel it in.
At this point, the spot you chose to Jig is the correct spot.  All you have to do now is to jig
at the exact same spot to get the fish.

My personal experience:  If you initially jigged at the center, all you have to do is double tap
“enter” to select the same spot and catch the fish.  No need to work to match the spot!

You've hooked something but cannot reel it in.
When you get this message, you just have to try another spot.

My personal experience:  If you initially jigged at the center.  I would jig to either the left
quarter or the right quarter (#1 or #2 on the image above)

You take in some line.
I interpret this as the direction of the spot you chose away from the original spot
is correct.
You should jig after the spot, but make sure you’re going the same direction away from
the original jig spot.

You take in a great deal of line.
Similar to the “You take in some line” scenario, but the point you chose is better.  Try to jig
close to the spot but not exactly on it.

The fish is taking line.
The point you chose away from the original jig spot is not correct.

My personal experience:  If you jigged at the center originally, I would mirror the spot
where I jigged to the opposite side of the center mark.  For example, if you jigged at the
#1 spot in the above image, I would go to the opposite side of the meter to #2.

The fish is taking a great deal of line.
The point you chose away from the original jig spot is not correct.

Again, this guide is to help assist beginner players with the basics on how to fish.
The tips given here may not apply to higher level fishing, but it’s still a good way to start off
at the early levels.

The bigger challenge will be to find out what combinations of bait, depth and jig spots are
needed to catch the more elusive fish.
